History

The idea of creating a professional union of Ethiopian academics in the diaspora which serves as a professional podium to promote and support the geophysical education and training in Ethiopia, was first proposed and discussed at the  American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2004 fall meeting in San Francisco, California. The meeting was attended by more than 10 Ethiopian geophysical professionals who overwhelmingly endorsed the proposal. To this end, a steering committee was charged with the responsibility of preparing the by-laws for the union. The committee presented the by-laws to the members for discussion and made some amendments in 2006, following which the first executive committee was elected. Soon after, ETGUI was officially registered as a non-profit organization in the state of Connecticut. Since then, the union has been actively working on different projects and achieved remarkable accomplishments in a short time.

Among its accomplishments, ETGUI provided two rounds of scholarships to Ethiopian students in Addis Ababa University, developed partnerships with similar organizations such as the AGU, identified core research areas in Ethiopia and developed proposals, and offered numerous career consultations to its members through various networking activities.
